In Nepal, the meaning of dhami varies according to the place. Dhami in Kathmandu valley and its sorrounding is considered a symbol of divine power. In Tistung and Nuwakot, Dhami is considered a symbol of Bhairava Power. Bhairava is also considered as another form of ruler. In Tistung, Dhami is considered as both Bhairava and ruler according to religious beliefs and cultural traditions. Dhami belongs to the Maharjan community. The story of the origin of Dhami in Tistung is said that when a shepherd placed a grasshopper on a stone by killing him, the power of Bajrabarahi was generated in the stone and Dhami’s power was generated in the shepherd. The Puja and faith of Dhami towards Barahi and Bhairava continued in Tistung due to the emergence of amazing power in stones and people. Dhami himself said that she is Barahi Devi. The tradition of Dhami speaking is still there. What he said should not be heard or can’t get heard by others. Dhami in Barahi Peeth predicts the incident that will happen in the state. This prediction is told to the Tantric priest Achaju (Karmacharya). If necessary, the priests tell the predictions of Dhami to the people. Dhami is also a religious ruler of the Tistung area. The people should give notice to Dhami to cultivate, to cut grass, trees in the forest and to build new houses in this area. If someone builds a house wall in a public places, or cultivates, the people also go along with it and stop it under the command and order of Dhami. There are many people in Tistung who know about such an incident. For the last three years, before the start of bajrabarahi Jatra (2012 A.D.) in the month of October (2011 A.D.), a program was organized from Newa Puch to Barahi ground. Dhami Madhuram Maharjan, who was the chief guest at the event, expressed his displeasure over the destruction of barahi ground. On that occasion, the priest Gopal Karmacharya also said that according to tradition before doing any work they should ask to Dhami and he protested that it was done arbitrarily without his approval.
